Chapter Fourteen

Dante

Upon returning home again, Dante wasted no time showering, dressing, and heading to the office. He drummed his fingers on the steering wheel as he contemplated the text from Matty that had woken him at five that morning.

–Donkeys sick, may have to change their feed– Matty.

Dante hadn’t bothered responding. What he and Matty would have to discuss would be better discussed in person.

The text wasn’t about a farm or ranch; Matty was referring to their mules, their very human mules. And the ‘feed’ would be the heroin they transported into and across the country. In fact, they had a large shipment that was headed to Europe, but if something was wrong with the product, they might not be able to make good on the buy. That would be… problematic. Those were not clients Dante wanted to cross; they were not just lucrative, but also dangerous.

After Matty’s text had woken him, Dante remained awake. He watched Cassie sleep as the sun rose, slowly flooding his room in soft light, and thought about the night before. She lay face-down on the bed, the blanket bunched around her waist and her hair fallen to the side. Her scars were clearly visible in the growing daylight. They weren’t attractive, for sure, but it didn’t reduce his attraction for her. If anything, it strengthened it, knowing the pain she had endured, never giving up.

Then there was the matter of how hard she’d tried to save her foster mother, even at the expense of her own safety. That level of loyalty was exactly what he’d been looking for. He’d struggled to find a woman he would be able to trust, who would put him and the family before everything else, and he had found her at last.

And then there was the question of whether he liked her, in addition to feeling she was a good fit for his needs. And the answer was a resounding yes. She was lovely, amusing, intelligent… and she’d responded beautifully to the small taste he had given her of his sexual appetite, matching him stroke for stroke. He was excited to show her more, as well, his mind buzzing with ideas for what to do with her next.

Grace’s words lingered behind the hum of sexual satisfaction, however; he was no more able to love a woman at that moment than he had been when Grace broke up with him. Was that something Cassie would need, even if he gave her everything else? Security, prosperity, companionship, sexual satisfaction, perhaps even children, some day… could that be enough for her? He didn’t want to invest time and effort into a relationship that was doomed to failure because she was unable to be in a match where there was no emotional connection, at least on his part.

Dante got out of bed at six a.m. on the dot. Sandra would be coming in soon to start breakfast and he needed to tell her to make enough for Cassie, as well. He pulled on sweats and a t-shirt and padded barefoot downstairs.
